James Fagas: Music to Sponsor Conventions By

James Fagas was a Mad Men-era composer/arranger who wrote jingles for Gulf, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, IBM, Comet, Noxzema, Vitalis, Winston, Lucky Strike, Kool, and AT&T, as well as scoring the Futurama ride for the 1964 World's Fair. This record comes from the Young and Rubicam agency and is described as a collection of original Fagan film scores "for Gulf Oil Corporation's sponsorship of the 1964 National Political Conventions". The implied idea that a giant oil company sponsored both Democratic and Republican national conventions is about as American as you can get. And the music certainly packages the whole country: in its quest to provide all moods for all possible situations - including, near the middle, a full minute or so of basic horror - in one unbroken 17-minute suite, it delivers an overall affect that's frankly psychotic. Just like America!
