Don Cossack Chorus conducted by Serge Jaroff: Religious Music

Here’s the fourth album of songs by Serge Jaroff’s Don Cossacks on Columbia Masterworks and the second released as a long-player, Religious Music (ML 2163) from 1950. Their version of “In Church (from Album for Children)” swirls equal parts brooding and religious awe into a concoction that’s just about the heaviest thing imaginable. You know, for kids!

Gretchaninoff: Augmented Litany (After the Gospel)
Rachmaninoff: Ave Maria (from “Evening Service”)
Traditional: Funeral Service (Adapted to commemorate those who have died in the recent war)
Tchaikovsky: In Church (from “Album For Children”)
Traditional: Let All Mortal Flesh
Tchesnokoff: Alleluia (from “Requiem”)
Folksong: Christmas Song

Don Cossack Chorus conducted by Serge Jaroff: Don Cossack Concert

In 1949 Columbia Masterworks released the label’s third album of songs by Serge Jaroff’s Don Cossacks, for the first time all on a single long-playing disc: A Don Cossack Concert (ML 2070). 1949 was the first year Andy Warhol started designing covers for Columbia Masterworks, but the jury’s still out on whether this is one of his.
