Various Artists: Battle of the Garages, Vol. 4: Tomorrow the World!

As the title promises, lots of great garage-eriffic trash here. Songs with just two chords when one was too many! (Be aware that unfortunately this record either was not Q.C.-ed during mastering or it was intentionally put in the race with a broken leg, because the side 1 master tape got crunched on many tracks, which suffer intermittent dropouts.)

The Otherside "Haunted House"
Les Thugs "Femme Fatale"

Ben Vandermeide: Learn Self-Hypnosis

Benjamin Vander Meide (1933-2007) was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He came to the United States and settled in Utah, where he began performing a hypnotist act onstage in 1969. This LP probably dates from before 1973, as there is another version of the LP dating from that year with an alternate cover, the art for which was clearly cribbed from this one.

Anne Sylvestre: Fabulettes

A really sweet album of kids' songs by French singer-songwriter Anne Sylvestre, with some glorious album art that I've carefully restored. Technically this album is still available for purchase, for instance from App Ull Myu Sick (and honestly this vinyl was a bit crunchy, so audio taken from the master tape is obviously preferred); but none of the streaming sites give a shit about artwork, and wow, this art is pretty great. So if you like the album, feel free to buy it from some mainstream source. (You'll be sending at least $0.03 per purchase to Anne's estate!!!)

Angelina: Confidential

From Bruce Bastin's book The Melody Man: Joe Davis and the New York Music Scene, 1916-1978:

On August 29 Davis recorded a dozen titles, including older risqué titles like "Electrician Blues" and "Shake Your Can," by New York City-based Joyce Heath, at Mastertone's studios on 8th Avenue with pianist Al Williams. Davis JD 112 Confidential was released as by Angelina, immediately before an album by Dardanelle Hadley. Confusingly, singer Inez "Lady" Washington, from 138th Street, New York, New York, signed with Davis that month and was credited with being the artist on this album; perhaps she is also Joyce Heath!

Doug Moody: Y

Documentary record built from actuality recordings related to the RFK assassination in 1968 and the subsequent trial of Sirhan Sirhan.

The record is not dated, but in an interview with ZigZag in July 1969, Frank Zappa said: "A guy named Doug Moody put the album together and offered it to us and we packaged it and put it out."

Hat tip to Rich Lindsay for the loan of the LP!

Jim Copp & Ed Brown: Gumdrop Follies

I grabbed this out of a children's records bin because I'm a sucker for absurdly generous production values (this record expands into a double-hinged gatefold which, when unfolded, forms a little stage, and it includes four card stock sheets full of characters for you to cut out and parade on that stage!). Plus I saw the track titles ("The Hen with a Low I.Q.") and thought: This could be wacky as hell. I was a bit disappointed, really—I guess I was expecting something more subversive. But I could be wrong; this entire album of children's songs could be a giant prank on the under-five set and their parents. The must-listen track here is "Mr. Hippity's Pull Toy", in which an elderly person (obviously suffering dementia) is dragging a pull toy through the streets of New York City when a vagrant child says the pull toy is going to die unless it's fed something called "junket" (!), and the dementia-addled senior wanders the streets asking advice from store owners, people in a church, and finally someone in line at the train station, before the person in line at the train station advises that the pensioner should come with her out to the country where the pull toy will be fine and everything will be all right. (I think all this may have been one of the discarded plot lines of "Naked Lunch".) You make the call!

Curtain Up!

Stefan Grossman: Hot Dogs

A miscellany of guitar fingerpicking from Brooklyn-born bluesman Stefan Grossman, in this his eighth album (and fourth of eight albums for Transatlantic Records) from 1972.

(Big shout-out to Music Millennium—still on Burnside in Portland, Oregon—whose staff in the 1970s thought it was a swell idea to use a 2.5" x 1.5" nonremoveable sticker as a price tag. Related advice: don't put your bookplate on a library book.)

Mark Prophet: Voice of Angels

Mark Prophet (1918-1973) formed the Summit Lighthouse religious organization in 1958, presumably because his last name was Prophet and he figured why fight it? He released this album in 1968, and it is 95 minutes of utter gibberish. Really, not a single sentence here is grounded in any known empirical reality. Good on you if it's your thing, but I fell asleep. Mark married Elizabeth Clare Prophet (1939-2009) in 1963 and after she killed him, she changed the name of the organization to the Church Universal and Triumphant, who you recall called for the destruction of individuals and groups making rock music for whom they called for the judgment of the sacred fire before the throne of almighty God

Only kidding...she didn't kill him! But who cares? Her job, like her husband's, was to fill the world with a torrent of bullshit. And I'm helping.

Radio Code By the Word Method Vol. II: The Life Story of Nikola Tesla in International Morse Code

A long time ago I did an interview about a big article I'd written on a film that was animated entirely in transparent fabric lit from below, and I lamented the fact that no one has ever done a film since using the same technique, saying "Boy, it would be a great skill for animators to learn!", which was an incredibly pretentious thing to say since I'm not in the animation industry and have no business telling animators what's best for them. So that's whydespite the fact that really I should be telling you to learn Morse code and then listen to this record (which is entirely in Morse code) and transcribe it yourself, saying "Imagine the satisfaction it'll bring you to master this new skill!"I won't suggest that. You don't need to learn Morse code. And here is a complete transcription:

"THE PRODIGAL GENIUS," SO WRITES JOHN J. ONEILL IN HIS STORY OF NIKOLA TESLA. HIS WIDE RANGE OF EXPERIMENTS AND DISCOVERIES MADE HIM ONE OF THE WORLDS OUTSTANDING ELECTRICIANS. HIS INVENTION OF THE INDUCTION MOTOR AND THE TESLA COIL, AS WELL AS THE ROTARY MAGNETIC FIELD PRINCIPLE, WON HIM WORLD WIDE FAME. RADIO AND WIRELESS AS WE KNOW IT TODAY SPRINGS FROM HIS EARLY EXPERIMENTATION AND INVENTION.

TESLA WAS BORN IN SMILJAN, SERBIA, ON JULY 10, 1857. HIS FATHER WAS A GREEK CLERGYMAN AND HIS MOTHER, GEORGINA MANDIC, AN INVENTOR.

HIS EDUCATION BEGAN WITH ONE YEAR OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND FOUR YEARS OF THE LOWER REALSCHULE AT GOSPIC, LIKA. HE THEN ATTENDED A HIGHER SCHOOL AT CARLSTADT, CROATIA, FROM WHICH HE GRADUATED IN 1873. THE NEXT FOUR YEARS WERE SPENT IN SPECIALIZED STUDIES AT THE POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL AT GRATZ FOLLOWED BY TWO YEARS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PRAGUE.

WITH HIS FORMAL SCHOOLING BEHIND HIM, TESLA HEADED FOR THE UNITED STATES. HE ARRIVED IN AMERICA WITH ONLY FOUR CENTS IN HIS POCKET. CONFIDENT IN AMERICA AS THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY, TESLA WALKED UP BROADWAY AND MET A GROUP OF WORKMEN STRUGGLING WITH AN ELECTRIC MOTOR. THEY PAID HIM TWENTY DOLLARS FOR REPAIRING IT.

THE NEXT FEW YEARS WERE BUSY ONES FOR THE ASPIRING YOUNG INVENTOR. HE WAS EMPLOYED FOR A TIME BY EDISON AT THE LABORATORY IN ORANGE, N.J. IN 1887, THE SHORTLIVED TESLA ELECTRIC COMPANY WAS FORMED. IN 1888, TESLA PRODUCED ALTERNATING CURRENT MOTORS # AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR, HIS SYSTEM OF ELECTRICAL CONVERSION AND DISTRIBUTION WAS DEVELOPED. HIS STUDIES INTO TRANSFORMER ACTION LED TO THE INVENTION OF THE TESLA COIL.

IN 1893, HE WROTE OF A SYSTEM OF WIRELESS TRANSMISSION AND HE TALKED OF TRANSMITTING POWER THROUGH THE AIR. HE DEVELOPED THE PRINCIPLE OF THE ROTARY MAGNETIC FIELD USED IN THE EARLY TRANSMISSION OF POWER AT NIAGARA FALLS. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE ARC LIGHTING SYSTEM, DYNAMOS, COILS, CONDENSERS AND OTHER ELECTRICAL APPARATUS.

IN 1895, AT NIAGARA, HIS METHOD OF GENERATING ALTERNATING CURRENT RESULTED IN PRODUCING 100,000 HORSEPOWER, EQUALLING THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION OF THE UNITED STATES.

TESLA WAS A FIRST CLASS MATHEMATICIAN AND PHYSICIST YEARS AHEAD OF HIS TIME. HERTZ HAD DEMONSTRATED THAT RADIO WAVES COULD BE REFLECTED. IT WAS TESLA WHO RECOGNIZED AND POINTED OUT THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THIS RADIO ECHO, THAT RESULTED IN THE PERFECTING OF RADAR IN WORLD WAR TWO.

EDISON AND TESLA DISAGREED ON SYSTEMS OF POWER TRANSMISSION. EDISON FAVORED DIRECT CURRENT. THIS WAS SO OBVIOUSLY LIMITED IN RANGE THAT TESLA PUT ALL OF HIS EFFORT INTO THE PROMOTION OF ALTERNATING CURRENT.

GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE, AFTER CAREFULLY EXAMINING THE TESLA SYSTEM, PURCHASED THE PATENTS AT THE UNHEARD OF PRICE OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS PLUS ONE DOLLAR PER HORSEPOWER. THE FIRST MAJOR PROJECT WAS THE WORLDS FAIR IN CHICAGO IN 1893, WHERE AMAZING ELECTRICAL DISPLAYS AND LIGHTING WERE ACHIEVED BY THE TESLA SYSTEM.

ON THE 13TH OF MARCH, 1895, FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE TESLA LABORATORY AND TOTALLY DESTROYED THE EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS TOKENS OF THE WORLDS FAIR TOGETHER WITH ALL OF TESLAS PERSONAL PAPERS. THE LABORATORY WAS OWNED BY THE TESLA ELECTRIC COMPANY ORGANIZED BY TESLA AND PRIVATE INVESTORS.

FOLLOWING THIS LOSS, TESLA FOUND HIMSELF IN FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. WESTINGHOUSE HAD EXPANDED HIS COMPANY SO RAPIDLY THAT HE ALSO WAS IN TROUBLE. FINANCIAL INTERESTS THAT HAD STEPPED INTO THE SITUATION DEMANDED THAT THE WESTINGHOUSE COMPANY BE REORGANIZED. THE FINANCIAL ADVISORS ALSO DEMANDED THAT SOME OF THE PLANS AND PROJECTS BE ABANDONED. THIS INCLUDED THE AGREEMENT WITH TESLA FOR ONE DOLLAR PER HORSEPOWER.

WESTINGHOUSE WENT TO TESLA AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. TESLA PROMPTLY TORE UP THE AGREEMENT. THIS GESTURE COST TESLA ABOUT TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS WHICH HE COULD HAVE USED IN LATER LIFE. HE DIED PENNILESS IN NEW YORK ON JANUARY 7, 1943.

A short note about the art: the reverse side of the LP sleeve is blank, which is why you won't see it included in the PDF. Interestingly, though, the sleeve did contain a bit of found material, an ad flyer related to the February 1976 issue of Ham Radio Magazine, and here it is:
