Skin: Sanity

This particular Skin is a Boston band from the 1980s, and apart from a 12” single that came out previous to this album, this 1987 full-length was all they released (on a custom imprint, as far as I can tell). It’s all pretty much bar-band medium-rock, except “Kakania”, which is the reason I originally bought it: a dark uptempo jungle instrumental with skronky sax riffs and vocals coming through an in-the-cracks harmonizer. Boston animator Karen Aqua made it the inspiration for her animated short of the same name in 1989, and I saw it at The Flicks in Boise, Idaho in one of the first theatrical collections of animated shorts I ever saw, which got me hooked on animated shorts for life.

St. Josephs' Maori Girls Choir: Pokarekare

Traditional Maori tunes sung by the girls of the St. Joseph’s Maori Girls College of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1963. In 1996 I did an LP trade on the internet, and along with the album I bought, this album was enclosed in the package as a stiffener. Oddly, when I started listing my albums on the internet for trade several years ago, three people from Oceania requested this on CD.

Experimental Audio Research: Pocket Symphony

Two ambient tracks by EAR, a side project of Pete Kember of Spacemen 3. This five-inch single came packaged in a CD sleeve, and it remains the smallest record in my collection. Sympathy for the Record Industry pressed it in 1994 prior to the release of EAR’s debut full-length Mesmerised. Digging the cover art, a painting by Anthony Ausgang called “The Pursuit of Happiness”.

Eugene Chadbourne: 198666

The very prolific Eugene Chadbourne’s 1986 single for Ralph Records, with five petulant, sarcastic folk ditties with just the right amount of noisy instrumental noodly goodness.

Second City: Comedy from the Second City

The cast of Second City at the time of this live recording in 1961 included Howard Alk, Alan Arkin, Severn Darden, Andrew Duncan, Barbara Harris, Mina Kolb, Paul Sand, and Eugene Troobnick. Don’t miss Alan Arkin delivering a scorching guitar-folk version of William Blake’s “Tiger” that deafened the front row and made the rest of the audience become folk singers.

Salloom Sinclair & The Mother Bear

Unbelievably good blues/rock/psych from 1968. Thanks again, Peter Bergman! (I first heard some cuts from this LP on an old Radio Free Oz aircheck.) “Sitting on a Finger” is one of my favorite things ever, and that spoken word intro can be sampled and put in front of ANYTHING and will make it more awesome so form a band and sample it NOW.
